Belgian Malinois for First-Time Owners: What You Need to Know
The Belgian Malinois is one of the most impressive dog breeds in the world. Their intelligence, athleticism, and unwavering loyalty make them the breed of choice for military and police forces worldwide. But does that make them a good family pet? Let's have an honest conversation.
Understanding the Malinois Temperament
Belgian Malinois are often described as having the energy of a Border Collie with the protective instincts of a German Shepherd — turned up to eleven. They are:
- Incredibly intelligent — they learn commands faster than almost any other breed
- Highly energetic — they need 1-2 hours of vigorous exercise DAILY
- Deeply loyal — they bond intensely with their primary handler
- Naturally protective — they have strong guarding instincts
- Work-driven — they NEED a job to do, whether it's obedience, agility, or scent work
The Truth About Living with a Malinois
We believe in complete transparency at Excell Pups. Here's what daily life with a Malinois really looks like:
Morning: A 45-60 minute walk, run, or training session before you leave for work. A bored Malinois left alone all day WILL find ways to entertain themselves — and you probably won't like their choices.
Midday: If you work full-time, consider a dog walker or doggy daycare. Malinois left alone for 8+ hours regularly can develop destructive behaviours and separation anxiety.
Evening: Another exercise session plus mental stimulation — training games, puzzle toys, or structured play. A tired Malinois is a good Malinois.
Weekend: This is where it gets fun. Hikes, runs, agility classes, protection sport training — Malinois thrive when they're doing something with their person.
Exercise: More Than Just Walks
Walking alone isn't enough for a Belgian Malinois. They need variety and intensity:
Physical Exercise
- Running or cycling alongside you (after 12-18 months when growth plates close)
- Swimming — excellent low-impact exercise
- Fetch and frisbee — they have incredible drive for ball and disc
- Hiking — the more challenging the terrain, the better
Mental Exercise (Equally Important!)
- Obedience training — they excel and love the challenge
- Nose work — hide treats or toys and let them search
- Puzzle feeders — make mealtimes a brain game
- Agility courses — even a DIY backyard setup works brilliantly
Training Your Belgian Malinois
Malinois are eager learners, but they need consistent, fair leadership. Here are our recommendations:
Principles
- Start training from day one — the moment your puppy arrives home
- Use positive reinforcement — Malinois respond brilliantly to rewards
- Be consistent — everyone in the household must follow the same rules
- Never use harsh punishment — it breaks trust and can create aggression
- Socialise extensively — expose your puppy to as many people, places, and situations as possible before 16 weeks
Training Timeline
- 8-12 weeks: Name recognition, sit, basic recall, crate training, house training
- 12-16 weeks: Down, stay, lead walking, socialisation intensive
- 4-6 months: More advanced obedience, impulse control, off-lead foundation
- 6-12 months: Adolescent management, proofing commands in distracting environments
- 12+ months: Advanced training, sport-specific work, CGC certification
Health and Lifespan
Belgian Malinois are generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 12-14 years. Key health considerations include:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia — all our breeding dogs are scored
- Eye conditions — annual CERF exams recommended
- Bloat (GDV) — feed smaller, more frequent meals and avoid exercise after eating
- Thyroid issues — routine blood work can catch early
- Sensitivity to anaesthesia — always inform your vet
Is a Malinois Right for You?
A Malinois might be perfect for you if:
- You have an active lifestyle and enjoy outdoor activities
- You can commit to daily training and mental stimulation
- You have experience with high-drive breeds (preferred but not essential)
- You want a dog that is truly bonded to you
- You have a securely fenced garden
- Someone is home for most of the day (or can arrange midday visits)
A Malinois might NOT be right for you if:
- You work long hours with no arrangements for the dog
- You want a low-maintenance, "easy" dog
- You have very young children and no experience with working breeds
- You don't have time for daily training
- You live in a small flat with no garden access
