Know Your Rottweiler

Powerful, loyal, and confident, the Rottweiler is a versatile working breed known for its exceptional guarding instincts and deep devotion to family. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts, today's Rottweilers excel as companions, service dogs, and guardians.

Breed History

The Rottweiler traces its roots to the Roman Empire, where mastiff-type dogs drove and guarded cattle as legions marched through Europe. In the German town of Rottweil, these dogs were refined into the breed we know today — stocky, powerful drover's dogs trusted by butchers to guard their earnings.

By the late 19th century, railroads replaced cattle drives, and the Rottweiler nearly went extinct. Dedicated breeders revived the breed, and its intelligence and work ethic quickly earned it roles in police, military, and search-and-rescue work. The AKC recognized the breed in 1931, and it has remained one of the most popular breeds in America ever since.

Temperament

Calm, confident, and courageous. Rottweilers are naturally protective without being aggressive. They form deep bonds with their families, are gentle with children they're raised with, and are reserved but watchful around strangers. Proper socialisation from puppyhood is essential to develop a well-rounded temperament.

Exercise

Moderate to high. Rottweilers need at least 60-90 minutes of daily exercise including walks, play sessions, and mental stimulation. They excel in obedience, tracking, herding trials, and protection sports. A tired Rottweiler is a well-behaved Rottweiler.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Rottweilers respond best to firm, consistent, positive reinforcement training. Early socialisation and puppy classes are essential. They thrive with a confident handler who establishes clear boundaries. Avoid harsh methods — this breed's sensitivity means they respond far better to reward-based training.

Health

Common concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma, aortic stenosis, and cruciate ligament injuries. Our breeding programme includes OFA hip/elbow evaluations, cardiac screening, and JLPP DNA testing. Average lifespan 9-10 years with proper care.

Ideal Family

Best suited for experienced dog owners who can provide leadership, consistent training, and socialisation. Excellent with families who have older children. Needs a home with space and owners committed to daily exercise. Not recommended for first-time dog owners.

Lifespan

9-10 years

Coat & Grooming

Short, dense double coat that's straight and coarse. Moderate shedding year-round with heavier seasonal shedding. Weekly brushing keeps the coat healthy. Bathe as needed. Minimal grooming required compared to long-coated breeds.
