In-Depth Knowledge

Know Your English Setter

The English Setter is a graceful, gentle sporting dog renowned for its beautiful feathered coat and kind disposition. Often called the "gentleman of the dog world," they combine elegance with a joyful, loving temperament.

Breed History

The English Setter is one of the oldest gundog breeds, with origins tracing back to 14th-century England. These elegant dogs were originally developed to locate game birds by "setting" or crouching near the quarry to indicate its position to hunters who would then cast nets over both dog and birds.

The modern English Setter was refined in the 19th century by two influential breeders: Edward Laverack, who spent 50 years developing a line prized for beauty and field ability, and R. Purcell Llewellin, who created a more field-oriented strain. The breed was among the first recognised by the Kennel Club in 1873.

Today, English Setters are cherished as both capable sporting dogs and wonderful family companions. Their gentle nature, stunning appearance, and playful spirit have earned them devoted admirers across the globe.

Temperament

Gentle, friendly, and affectionate. English Setters are known for their sweet, mellow disposition. They are excellent with children, welcoming with strangers, and get along well with other dogs. They have a playful, sometimes mischievous streak that endears them to everyone.

Exercise

High energy breed needing at least 1-2 hours of exercise daily. They love running, hiking, and swimming. Their natural hunting instincts make them excellent companions for outdoor adventures.

Training

Intelligent and willing to please but can be sensitive. Respond best to gentle, positive reinforcement methods. They are sensitive to harsh correction. Keep training sessions engaging and varied.

Health

May be prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness, and hypothyroidism. Regular vet check-ups, proper nutrition, and appropriate exercise help maintain overall health.

Ideal Family

Excellent choice for active families with children. Ideal for homes with a secure garden. Great for families who enjoy outdoor activities. Their gentle nature makes them wonderful therapy dogs.

Lifespan

10-12 years

Coat & Grooming

Medium-length, flat, silky coat with beautiful feathering on ears, chest, legs, and tail. Requires brushing several times weekly to prevent matting.
